It’s been a long four years since Wavves last released any music and it feels a lot longer — 2020 lasted ten years alone. “Sinking Feeling” marks Wavves’ return to Fat Possum Records and is the first offering of new music since their 2017 album, You’re Welcome.
Surprise new single “Sinking Feeling” finds the band revitalised, turning existential dread into an infectious three-minute surf-rock cut in the way only Wavves can. The song, a first taste of a forthcoming release, is a result of the band coming together with musician and producer Dave Sitek of TV on the Radio who helped them fully realise the track after workshopping the song in a series of now-abandoned studio sessions.
Speaking on the song, Nathan Williams says: “‘Sinking Feeling’ is a song about a wave of depression that keeps coming back. It’s that sinking feeling that drags you down and no matter what you do or where you go it follows you.”

It’s definitely not the grimy Wavves we are used to. Nathan’s voice is usually buried under a layer of filth and the lyrics are indecipherable but this is good stuff and I’m just relieved to see some balance return to proceedings. We all saw what happened in the world over the last four years without Wavves. Don’t let that happen again.
